The forum “Build, Create and Inspire”

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the School of Architecture of Aguascalientes hosted the forum “Build, Create, and Inspire”, an academic and professional gathering where two distinguished architects, Dr. Arq. Marlene Barba and Mtra. Arq. Ilse Thomae, shared their experiences and reflections with the student community. Both speakers addressed key aspects of design, construction, and the opportunities that arise in the practice of architecture, emphasizing the profound impact the profession has on society and the importance of embracing it with responsibility and commitment.

Throughout their interventions, they spoke about the challenges faced in the field, highlighting the need for continuous preparation, resilience in the face of difficulties, and respect for others. They stressed that the architect’s greatest strength lies in attitude, as today’s world demands specialized and resilient professionals. Reflecting on frustration and perseverance, they reminded the audience that inspiration exists but must find us working, and that persistence is essential to overcoming obstacles. They also noted that there are no “magic recipes” in the profession and that traveling is one of the most enriching ways to learn and expand architectural practice.

Another central theme was the importance of collective memory and conscious intervention in the built environment, as many architectural treasures are often lost without notice, underscoring the need to value and protect cultural heritage. Finally, they emphasized the significance of respect and admiration, affirming that “we seek respect, we give respect; respect and admiration are earned, and change begins from our own trenches.”
